Possible Shark Sighting Off
Antigua and Barbuda marine ecologist Ruleo Camacho says there is no cause for alarm after reviewing video footage of what appeared to be a pod of baby sharks in Marina Bay Lagoon.
The video was captured by a resident around 7:00 a.m. in the Dickenson Bay area.
Camacho said that while he could not fully confirm whether it was a shark due to the quality of the footage, juvenile sharks are commonly found closer to shore.
“That’s where the nursery habitats are. They’re feeding in the seagrass beds there. These are the areas that they’re hanging out,” he said.
“It’s actually a sign of a healthier marine ecosystem when you see sharks,” he added.
“There’s no fences in the sea. Sharks are a very, very important part of the marine environment and the fact that we’re able to see sharks in our waters again is an indication that this environment is able to support some level of health,” he said.
“However, I will caution this by saying [the] video isn’t really clear and so it’s very hard for me to deduce exactly what behaviour is occurring.”
