Global earthquake activity is not increasing, despite a recent series of devastating events around the world.
Experts addressing regional safety concerns on Observer AM said improved monitoring technology and the locations of several high-profile disasters have created a false impression that global seismic activity is surging.
Dr William Barnhart, Assistant Coordinator of the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, said the planet averages 12 to 13 earthquakes of magnitude seven or greater each year — roughly one per month. Several large earthquakes have struck near major population centres in recent months, drawing extensive media coverage, but the global frequency remains within the normal range.
Dr Yomi Gaius Osotuyi, a seismologist at The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre, addressed recent seismic events in Venezuela and Colombia. He said strong seismic waves can cause localised ground deformation near an earthquake, but large, distant earthquakes do not directly trigger major events thousands of miles away.
Both experts also debunked the popular myth of “earthquake weather”, saying atmospheric heat and humidity have no connection to deep seismic faults.
Turning to immediate safety, the seismologists stressed that falling structures and objects — rather than ground movement itself — cause most injuries during an earthquake. They urged the public to abandon outdated practices such as running outdoors or standing in doorways, recommending instead the “drop, cover and hold on” protocol.
Residents across the region are encouraged to secure heavy household items, prepare emergency supply kits and practise their family emergency response plans.
