Legendary West Indies fast bowler and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons assistant coach Sir Curtly Ambrose has thanked the Antiguan and Barbudan public for what he described as the “really brilliant” support the team received during its four Caribbean Premier League (CPL) home games.
“It was a magnificent crowd. We were all surprised that every single game, every night, the crowd came out. I mean, last year we had a decent crowd, but this year was really, really brilliant. We enjoyed it and we played some good cricket, so they left very, very comfortable and pleased that we’ve done so well. And that’s what winning does: you win games, the crowd will come out and support you. I just want to say to the Antiguans and Barbudans, we all appreciate the support and hopefully we can go all the way and make them even happier,” he said.
Reports indicate that close to 6,000 fans attended the Falcons versus Barbados Tridents match on August 25, while close to 10,000 watched the home team take on the Guyana Amazon Warriors on August 23.
On August 22, a little over 7,000 people attended the Falcons versus Trinbago Knight Riders match at the North Sound venue, while just over 5,000 seats were occupied during the first home game against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on August 20.
Falcons head coach Paul Nixon commended the grounds staff at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium for creating what he said were wonderful playing conditions.
“I thought it was excellent. I thought we had some unbelievable games, with most games going to the wire, which is what broadcasters want. Sometimes coaches and players don’t want it to go to the wire, but no, we’ve had some wonderful grounds. I felt last year that we had some good pitches, and a lot depends on the weather; a lot depends on the conditions that are out of their control. The nice thing for us is the communication is good. We’re very open and honest with each other. Our relationships are fantastic and they try to give us everything we can have, which we really respect and thank them for,” he said.
The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons won three of their four matches at home with wins over the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, the Trinbago Knight Riders and the Barbados Tridents.
